31/05 Danse Noire

Danse Noire, a collective and label co-founded by Aisha Devi bring their semi-regular nights to Fitzroy with a line-up showcasing some of the most interesting artists in contemporary electronic music. @dansenoire @33emybw (live) @dis_fig @cassius_select @assyoutii Dis Fig: For Berlin-based producer and DJ Felicia Chen (aka Dis Fig), risk-taking and provocation is an integral part of the creative process. Chen's live show fleshes out the unflinching sonics of debut LP PURGE (released in Spring 2019 on New York collective and experimental label PTP) into an astonishing and annihilating spectacle, her singularity on stage only augmenting the sense of a very personal rite of exorcism. Marking a move away from the dancefloor strictures that Dis Fig continues to explore in her full-blooded, multi-layered DJ sets, PURGE is a calculated procedure towards a new chaotic world. Tinted by fever dream atmospherics, Chen places her own vocals, which morph between inconsolable distorted wails and polyphonic reverie, at the forefront. Purge is an involuntary act; it journeys into the body-breaking cost of emotional repression and the crippling catharsis that inevitably follows. "This ain’t just your run-of-the-mill wall of power electronics and angry screams ... Dis Fig’s range is surprisingly undogmatic, including synthetic brass sections, flutes, and piles of quiet" - The Quietus "Harrowing as they can be, PURGE’s compositional twists and turns are harsh enough to offer you the same thing that they offered Dis Fig herself — relief from the bad shit you’re holding inside" - VICE In 2020, Dis Fig linked up with The Bug to create their album In Blue (released on Hyperdub), leaving her productions aside for intimate vocals and lyricism to match. “Dis Fig is the latest collaborator who brings out the best in (The Bug), revealing a new facet of her own artistry and unlocking a new dimension to The Bug's sound. Dis Fig transcends In Blue's origins in genre exercise into an otherworldly fever dream, an album of tectonic bass and thundering drums that somehow feels intimate and sensual. It's as much her triumph as it is his.” - Resident Advisor 33EMYBW Shanghai native producer and visual artist 33EMYBW has been an active member in the Chinese music scene for over a decade. Drawing inspirations from modern dance music, folk music and wide range of visual materials, she gradually refined a variety of mixed conceptual elements into a form that combines very personal rhythm and stunning experimental sound designs. Her 2018 album 'Golem', released on SVBKVLT, was met with critical acclaim and was voted one of the best electronic albums of 2018 by Bandcamp, as well as gaining support and praise from the likes of Kode9, Desto, Akito, 8ulentina and many more. Following recent live sets at Nyege Nyege Festival, Uganda, and at the Aphex Twin curated opening of the 2019 Warehouse Project, Manchester, 33EMYBW's third album, entitled 'arthropods' was released via SVBKVLT mid October. This album continues the topics of post-human and evolution that she explored before, and experiment with rhythms in a longer time scale. She premiered the release and her new live show at Unsound Festival, Krakow, followed by shows in London, Milan and Zurich in 2019. Important performance/venue that she played includes Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), SXSW(Austin), CTM(Berlin), Soft Centre(Sydney) and Recombinant(San Francisco). On the other hand, 33EMYBW is also a core member of Shanghai’s most well known experimental rock/electronic band ‘Duck Fight Goose(YADAE)’. In 2019, she started using materials from Dong Choir (traditional music from Gui Zhou province of China) to create unique music and sounds, which lead to the release of “DONG2” under Merrie Records from Beijing. Raphael: Raphael (Rodriguez) is an A&R, curator and label/artist manager based between Berlin and Barcelona. Across physical spaces and recorded mediums, he has contributed to various events, festivals and labels, amongst others managing the label PAN between 2018 and 2022. He is one of the co-founders of Swiss-based collective Danse Noire with Aisha Devi, a structure dedicated to publishing exploratory, music-related works since 2013. Assyouti: Born and raised in the overpopulated and disorienting capital, Cairo, Assyouti grew up immersed in the city’s cacophonous noise pollution and seemingly unending chaos. Now, he blends this chaotic stimulus into his own original productions, these inspirations result in a highly rhythmic, intense style that twists and distorts vocal and drum samples, processing them beyond recognition. 16/05 Echoes

𝕰𝖈𝖍𝖔𝖊𝖘, Chinabot’s first release with Morgan Sully of Memeshift, takes us from Borneo to Berlin, collapsing decades and continents through electronic experimentation and personal recordings. Through the process, he asks if it is possible to reconfigure a cohesive sense of home from the diverse elements of a diasporic experience. This night will celebrate the release of his album, featuring artists from Chinabot including Neo Geodesia, Pisitakun, Jaeho Hwang, Chooc Ly with local legend Marylou joining in support Chinabot is a platform and collective created to change the dialogue surrounding Asian music championing the global movement of adventurous music from the asian diaspora.  Chinabot incorporates a record label, event promoter and radio programme. Started in 2017, the multi-disciplinary label and network of Asian artists decided to cooperate on a new way to collect and promote exciting Asian music. Releasing undiscovered artists from Bahrain to Thailand, Chinabot is positioned at the junction point between the influence of Asian music on contemporary/traditional sounds, music outside the mainstream and the development of experimentation. Whether it’s Jazz folk music, experimental ambient or mutant techno, we celebrate exciting new music that falls between the gaps -- a place for adventurous listening.   Memeshift @memeshift - live   Morgan’s music is heavily electronic with echoes of noise, IDM and rave. His recent influences invoke the music of his matrilineal roots from southeast Asia, proposing music that’s noisy, playful and magical.  Previously, Morgan co-curated Soy&synth, an experimental concert series with Indonesian collective Soydivision, co-releasing much of the output on their sister label L-KW alongside Midnight Shift.  Morgan is also initiator of Latent Sonorities which produced an open source sample pack and tuning files of local Javanese gamelan instruments. Its public co-release with Yogyakarta’s Yes No Wave was accompanied by a concert series, DAW tools, live-recorded album and guide for other artists and researchers working to expand our sonic imaginaries. https://linktr.ee/Memeshift Neo Geodesia @neogeodesia - live Neo Geodesia is Saphy Vong, a French Cambodian audio visual artist born in a Thai refugee camp after his parents fled the Khmer Rouge, and grew up in the suburbs of Nancy, northeastern France. His unique musical outlook fuses the experimental and DIY ethos that can be found in the local Nancy Hardcore and Grindcore scene that embraced him as a teenager, and the sounds broadcasted from Cambodia into his home through his parents pirated tapes and videos of Khmer pop, karaoke, monk chants, and movies.   Jaeho Hwang - @jaeho111111 - live Jaeho Hwang is a London/Seoul-based DJ, producer, and visual artist who recontextualises traditional Korean instrumentation and brings it into the contemporary club music scene. After releasing his first EP on Chinabot in 2019, he has been featured in DJ Mag, BBC Radio 6 Music, 4:3 Boiler Room, XLR8R, DUMMY Magazine and Mixmag Korea. Now based primarily in Seoul, he is involved with Seoul community radio and Nek-O Future Club. Pisitakun @pisitakun - live   Pisitakun Kuantalaeng (b.1986) graduated with a BFA in Sculpture, School of Architecture, Art, and Design – King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Bangkok, Thailand.  Pisitakun has been weaving traditional Thai instrumentation together with pounding rhythms and rugged samples, building post-industrial noisescape since 2014. A large part of his inspiration lies in a frustration at his country’s political life and censorship rules, forging these protest songs to turn noise into fiery expressions of hope – and anger. He has performed at CTM Festival (Berlin), Asian Meeting Festival (Tokyo), MEIA (Aveiro), Schiev (Brussels), Rokolectiv (Bucharest) and Cafe OTO (London). His previous releases on Chinabot are SOSLEEP(2018) created shortly after the death of his father from cancer, and combined traditional mourning instruments with harsh noise and techno beats, wrapping them around intimate recordings of the hospital machinery that kept his father alive during his final days. and Absolute C.O.U.P. (2020). He also released Kongkraphan (2022) on Yes No Wave, toured with Gabber Modus Operandi in Thailand. He’s also part of the SHAPE Platform roaster of artists for 2022 and has performed with the likes of Meuko Meuko, Abadir, Evita Manji.   Chooc Ly @chooclytan - DJ Chooc Ly is a multi-disciplinary artist, DJ, music & cultural producer who works across moving images, DJ sets, radio podcasts, event organising, and club nights, with a background in sculpture and performance. Her practice sets out to create new visions of reality by subverting or repurposing systems and tools we use to understand the world around us – such as concepts and methodologies from physics, politics and music. She also co-runs the London club night Décalé. As a DJ, Chooc Ly fiercely and emotionally weaves music together through kaleidoscopic spectrums of club music and futuristic sounds. Past gigs include: av_cache, TASTE, GGI 끼, Body Movements Festival, Howl Queer City IV, Queering Now, Décalé x Chinabot (all in London), Swallow (Los Angeles), Regenerative Feedback (WORM, Rotterdam), Chalet Wote Festival (Accra, Ghana), and Poekhali! (Landmark, Bergen Kunsthall, Norway). Recent music releases include Exaltation Onirique on the Chinabot compilation ‘5’, ‘coeur bioluminescent’ for  OUTPUTS sampler1, and remixes on metronomicon, Lost Map and La Boocle. chooclytan.net   Marylou @oiseaudanseur - DJ Marylou is a french, Berlin-based DJ. Morphine Records & Ominira affiliate has got impeccable tastes focusing on a no boundaries selection. Pleasure and repetition, declension of the word percussion, Marylou carves raw oneirism.  Raised between forests and ocean in the south west coast of France, her first languages are painting and cinema before she got involved in different ways (writing, drawing, promoting) in the parisian birthing scene in the 2010's. Her daring and psychedelic sets are always an experimentation of her true style : From Traditional music, improv jazz and Noise to dub, bass, footwork and jungle, there are always special instants in Marylou’s mixes which have already gotten the likes of edgy festivals & platforms like Terraforma, Freerotation, Intonal, CTM, Meakusma, or in clubs from Berghain to cafe Oto
