Dis Fig:
For Berlin-based producer and DJ Felicia Chen (aka Dis Fig), risk-taking and provocation is an integral part of the creative process.
Chen’s live show fleshes out the unflinching sonics of debut LP PURGE (released in Spring 2019 on New York collective and experimental label PTP) into an astonishing and annihilating spectacle, her singularity on stage only augmenting the sense of a very personal rite of exorcism.
Marking a move away from the dancefloor strictures that Dis Fig continues to explore in her full-blooded, multi-layered DJ sets, PURGE is a calculated procedure towards a new chaotic world. Tinted by fever dream atmospherics, Chen places her own vocals, which morph between inconsolable distorted wails and polyphonic reverie, at the forefront. Purge is an involuntary act; it journeys into the body-breaking cost of emotional repression and the crippling catharsis that inevitably follows.
“This ain’t just your run-of-the-mill wall of power electronics and angry screams … Dis Fig’s range is surprisingly undogmatic, including synthetic brass sections, flutes, and piles of quiet” – The Quietus
“Harrowing as they can be, PURGE’s compositional twists and turns are harsh enough to offer you the same thing that they offered Dis Fig herself — relief from the bad shit you’re holding inside” – VICE
In 2020, Dis Fig linked up with The Bug to create their album In Blue (released on Hyperdub), leaving her productions aside for intimate vocals and lyricism to match.
“Dis Fig is the latest collaborator who brings out the best in (The Bug), revealing a new facet of her own artistry and unlocking a new dimension to The Bug’s sound. Dis Fig transcends In Blue’s origins in genre exercise into an otherworldly fever dream, an album of tectonic bass and thundering drums that somehow feels intimate and sensual. It’s as much her triumph as it is his.” – Resident Advisor
33EMYBW
Shanghai native producer and visual artist 33EMYBW has been an active member in the Chinese music scene for over a decade. Drawing inspirations from modern dance music, folk music and wide range of visual materials, she gradually refined a variety of mixed conceptual elements into a form that combines very personal rhythm and stunning experimental sound designs. Her 2018 album ‘Golem’, released on SVBKVLT, was met with critical acclaim and was voted one of the best electronic albums of 2018 by Bandcamp, as well as gaining support and praise from the likes of Kode9, Desto, Akito, 8ulentina and many more.
Following recent live sets at Nyege Nyege Festival, Uganda, and at the Aphex Twin curated opening of the 2019 Warehouse Project, Manchester, 33EMYBW’s third album, entitled ‘arthropods’ was released via SVBKVLT mid October. This album continues the topics of post-human and evolution that she explored before, and experiment with rhythms in a longer time scale. She premiered the release and her new live show at Unsound Festival, Krakow, followed by shows in London, Milan and Zurich in 2019. Important performance/venue that she played includes Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), SXSW(Austin), CTM(Berlin), Soft Centre(Sydney) and Recombinant(San Francisco).
On the other hand, 33EMYBW is also a core member of Shanghai’s most well known experimental rock/electronic band ‘Duck Fight Goose(YADAE)’. In 2019, she started using materials from Dong Choir (traditional music from Gui Zhou province of China) to create unique music and sounds, which lead to the release of “DONG2” under Merrie Records from Beijing.
Raphael:
Raphael (Rodriguez) is an A&R, curator and label/artist manager based between Berlin and Barcelona. Across physical spaces and recorded mediums, he has contributed to various events, festivals and labels, amongst others managing the label PAN between 2018 and 2022.
He is one of the co-founders of Swiss-based collective Danse Noire with Aisha Devi, a structure dedicated to publishing exploratory, music-related works since 2013.
Assyouti:
Born and raised in the overpopulated and disorienting capital, Cairo, Assyouti grew up immersed in the city’s cacophonous noise pollution and seemingly unending chaos. Now, he blends this chaotic stimulus into his own original productions, these inspirations result in a highly rhythmic, intense style that twists and distorts vocal and drum samples, processing them beyond recognition.
